We currently produce around 6,000 tons of gelatin in the Netherlands, but we’re on track to increase that to 10,000 tons in the near future. Most of the growth will need to come from the factory in Cuddalore (India) and our factory here in Emmen. “The group is has set its sights on playing an even bigger role in the gelatin and collagen market. The company has been active in the Netherlands for 15 years now. ![]() Nowadays, what with our Japanese roots, being partly Indian-owned and with factories in Asia as well as Europe, we’re a truly international organization.” All the collagen is made in Japan, which is where Jellice first originated in 1941. Both these products are made from pigskins, fish, poultry and bovine bone. The Jellice Group has five factories worldwide and produces an annual total of more than 15,000 tons of gelatin and collagen. Is it true that you’re the only European site within the Jellice Group? And the applications can sometimes be surprising… gelatin is even used in paintballs, for example!” But besides that, gelatin is also an important ingredient in countless meat, dairy, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. We sell the lion’s share of our products to the European food processing industry, and in particular to confectionery manufacturers. Gelatin has very specific product characteristics that are difficult to recreate using plant-based material. Consumers are familiar with it as gelatin sheets or as an ingredient in jelly, but it goes much further than that. “Gelatin is a natural and also unique product with numerous applications. In 2010, it was sold to Japanese/Indian owners and they further modernized and expanded the process. “The German firm called Econtis originally built the high-tech Jellice factory in Emmen in 2006 to produce top-quality gelatin from pig skins. There are just two gelatin companies in the Netherlands, with other major players spread throughout Europe and beyond: “Even so, Jellice has managed to make waves in the industry within a short space of time.” According to Adrie van Belzen, General Manager of Jellice, it is a fairly small and specialized sector.
